Low back pain is a very common reason that people seek medical care and it can be difficult to treat. But a major research study was published in 2011 showing that for most people massage therapy was a bit better than drugs and usual care for general lower back pain. And a little more than a third of the group received more significant benefits.
The study compared weekly relaxation massages, weekly massages of specific muscles in the low back area, and usual care (including medication, physical therapy, chiropractic, or no care). Both massage groups performed better than the usual care group, which is good news for you. Not only will your relaxation massage banish your stress, it may help with your low back pain.
“At the end of the 10-week intervention, 36% and 39% of patients in the massage groups said their pain was nearly or completely gone, compared to 4% in the usual care group.-WebMD Health News”
